You LOVE your property. You have many memories there and past hunting experiences that make you think you got things pretty much figured out - but why do you still have a gnawing feeling?
Probably because you know you may be fall prey to by your own mind. Missing opportunities to improve your set up.
You see, we all wear blinders when it comes to the matters closest to our heart.
Now I’ve learned something new from every client I’ve worked with. They are accomplished hunters. Even so a couple obvious patterns stick out:
1. I have yet to complete a deer plan for a client who was properly accessing their property to hunt.
2. I have never worked with a client where I didn’t see either a completely misplaced food plot, or a big miss on where one should go.
The question you need to ask yourself is, “Am I really using this property to its very best potential?”
I mean really, how do you know? If you're a private landowner, you’ve probably stuck to your own ground for sometime. That means you haven’t been learning from other parcels via hunting, food plot layouts or anything else for that matter. Your perspective has been squished into a postage stamp piece of ground in a big green sea of deer habitat.
We need to zoom out, before we can zoom back in.
I will give you an example from our own hunting property of 80 acres located in big buck country in SW Wisconsin. It's great deer country, but our problem was, the food was just not there as we had limited food plot options. Were big bucks seen on the property every year? Sure they were, but we could not hold them nor predict them. It took years of failed cuttings, plantings, deer attractants and playing tree stand hopscotch to finally realize that our property was not ever going to be a destination property for food.
Gun buck, taken from a stand location never used for 20 years after we took our blinders off.
Zooming out onto the landscape however, we were the perfect location for bedding and water. Once we settled in on that concept, our energies could then be spent directing the flow of movement through the property for cruising bucks. We still have food, but our new strategy is trail layout and ambush stands, not big food.
Everything fell into place.
Before our blinders did not allow us to see the property limitations as they were, and because of that we never focused our energies on what would really would make the difference.
How many seasons do you think you have left to hunt realistically?
We all have a limited number of seasons left to get it right before your free time in the woods is up. A sad reality of life.
If you love something, go for it. Don’t feel bad for spending time and money on your passion. And remember, everyone who succeeds had someone else who helped them learn and get there. Great people find success because of other great people they meet along the way.
